Yoga and its 8 types
YOGA
Doing physical and breathing exercises is a small part of yoga. It connects our minds with our bodies. In yoga, we have to move forward step by step, only then we will be able to achieve the final stage that is 'samadhi'. Based on these steps yoga is divided into eight types.
Eight types of yoga :
1) YAMA
According to the Patanjali Yoga Sutra, this is the first step of yoga among the eight parts of yoga. Yama is basically how you behave outwardly towards other beings. It includes Non-Violence, Truthfulness, Non-Stealing, Brahmcharya Moderation, Freedom from Grasping.
2) NIYAMA
There are five Niyamas describe by Patanjali Yoga Sutra, which applies to how you conduct yourself on a more personal level. These are Cleanliness, Contentment, Self-discipline, Self Study, Surrender. Cleanliness implies to clear mind, a clean environment, a clean body, good hygiene.
3) ASANA
Asana is basically related to the right body postures like the Right way of standing position, we always stand in a way so that our body weight should be equally balanced on both the legs and there should be the proper distance between toes of both the feet. The posture of sitting is in such a way that the back of the person should be straight and weight should be on ribs not on the backbone. While sleeping be sure that you are not facing any problem in breathing. Asanas also include many physical exercises. Postures are basically helpful in meditation because it helps us to sit for a long time with a straight back.
4) PRANAYAMA
Prayanam related to the word "Pran" which means soul. It includes many breathing exercises or we can say that we do inner engineering to control our mind. Some of Prayanams are:-
5) PRATAYAHAR
In this yoga, the person learns to withdraw from our senses. In this process, one should learn to control the mind. To practice, this one has to concentrate on one sense like hearing at a time rather than roam among the other senses.
6) DHARNA
This is the sixth step of Yoga. To practice this, one has to focus on a single point inside the body or outside the body and hold concentration on it. Dharna is the approach towards meditation. Excessive talking and working should be avoided to achieve success in the dharna because it distracts our mind.
7) DHYAN
Dhyan means meditation. Meditation is a state of consciousness. It is the most important among the eight steps of yoga. One can practice it by focusing on his/her breathing and if divert to other things then try return to breathing. By practicing it for some time you will find that concentration will be improved and memory power will also increase.
8) SAMADHI
Samadhi is the last stage of yoga. It is the state of high consciousness in which a person becomes aware of everything. At this stage, one's soul united with the supreme soul. This is the aim of every yogi. To achieve this stage one should follow the above steps in a proper manner.
