Yoga and its 8 types

YOGA

Yoga is a way of life. The word Yoga coming from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj'.  The word 'Yuj' means 'to unite'. The ultimate aim of yoga is to unite our soul with the universal soul or with god. It teaches us how to live a happy and healthy life. Nowadays many people think that yoga is something only doing physical and breathing exercises but this is not true.

Doing physical and breathing exercises is a small part of yoga. It connects our minds with our bodies. In yoga, we have to move forward step by step, only then we will be able to achieve the final stage that is 'samadhi'. Based on these steps yoga is divided into eight types.

 Eight types of yoga :

1)  YAMA

According to the Patanjali Yoga Sutra, this is the first step of yoga among the eight parts of yoga. Yama is basically how you behave outwardly towards other beings. It includes Non-Violence, Truthfulness, Non-Stealing, Brahmcharya Moderation, Freedom from Grasping.

2) NIYAMA

There are five Niyamas describe by Patanjali Yoga Sutra, which applies to how you conduct yourself on a more personal level. These are Cleanliness, Contentment, Self-discipline, Self Study, Surrender. Cleanliness implies to clear mind, a clean environment, a clean body, good hygiene.

3) ASANA

Asana is basically related to the right body postures like the Right way of standing position, we always stand in a way so that our body weight should be equally balanced on both the legs and there should be the proper distance between toes of both the feet. The posture of sitting is in such a way that the back of the person should be straight and weight should be on ribs not on the backbone. While sleeping be sure that you are not facing any problem in breathing. Asanas also include many physical exercises. Postures are basically helpful in meditation because it helps us to sit for a long time with a straight back.

4) PRANAYAMA

Prayanam related to the word "Pran" which means soul. It includes many breathing exercises or we can say that we do inner engineering to control our mind. Some of Prayanams are:-
  • Bhastrika Pranayama
  • Anuloma-Viloma
  • Kapalbhati

5) PRATAYAHAR

In this yoga, the person learns to withdraw from our senses. In this process, one should learn to control the mind. To practice, this one has to concentrate on one sense like hearing at a time rather than roam among the other senses.

6) DHARNA

This is the sixth step of Yoga. To practice this, one has to focus on a single point inside the body or outside the body and hold concentration on it. Dharna is the approach towards meditation. Excessive talking and working should be avoided to achieve success in the dharna because it distracts our mind.

7) DHYAN

Dhyan means meditation. Meditation is a state of consciousness. It is the most important among the eight steps of yoga. One can practice it by focusing on his/her breathing and if divert to other things then try return to breathing. By practicing it for some time you will find that concentration will be improved and memory power will also increase.

8) SAMADHI

Samadhi is the last stage of yoga. It is the state of high consciousness in which a person becomes aware of everything. At this stage, one's soul united with the supreme soul. This is the aim of every yogi. To achieve this stage one should follow the above steps in a proper manner.
